The Gift

A nurse checks
the motorcyclist’s wallet:

nineteen-year-old,
Darren Dawson carries a card—

A telephone rings
at eleven Edwin Square
where a packed bag awaits.

They load into the car,
they dash down the M6.

Dressed in a small NHS gown,
a young lad is lifted onto a bed,
bright lights hang.

Monitors bleep—
doctors perform
on eight-year-old Timmy.

Out in two faraway corridors,
couples cling.

A gift of a heart lives on.
